The attention contagion effect refers to the phenomenon where one person’s focus or attention influences others around them to direct their attention to the same thing. In other words, attention is socially contagious — people tend to look at or concentrate on what others are paying attention to. This is because humans are wired to follow social cues. Therefore, attention (or the lack of it) can easily spread around a classroom!

This staff meeting starter provides an opportunity for staff to consider and discuss attention and inattention in their classrooms and to share and develop strategies to encourage active learning, address inattentiveness and create a supportive classroom culture.
