Helping a shy child feel comfortable in class is all about lowering the “social stakes” while building their confidence in small, manageable steps. Supporting shy pupils requires a focus on psychological safety, gradual exposure, and inclusive communication methods.

Research highlights that building a trusting, one-on-one relationship with the pupil is the most effective foundation for reducing their social anxiety. To further support our pupils, we should model empathy and confidence while avoiding labelling them as ‘shy’ or pressuring them to talk.

This staff meeting starter encourages staff to consider the strategies they have available to support all pupils through the provision of low-pressure participation strategies, social and emotional support and gradual confidence building.
