In this focused one‑hour session, part of our Unpacking the School Inspection Toolkit series, we will explore what Ofsted expects within the attendance and behaviour evaluation area and how leaders can evidence strong, inclusive practice.

You’ll gain clarity on how inspectors evaluate attendance priorities, behaviour culture, pupil attitudes to learning and the effectiveness of support for pupils with additional needs, including those accessing alternative provision.

  • How leaders promote a culture of high expectations for attendance, behaviour and attitudes to learning so all pupils feel safe, valued and motivated.
  • How attendance is prioritised, with pupils attending regularly, arriving punctually and receiving consistent support when absence occurs.
  • How leaders create a safe, respectful culture where positive behaviour is the norm and bullying or discrimination are not tolerated.
  • How leaders use attendance and behaviour data to demonstrate the impact of the school’s work in both areas.
  • How inclusive and proportionate attendance and behaviour approaches support pupils with additional needs, including the effective use of alternative provision.
  • Practical ways to use the information to refine and update the attendance and behaviour section of your SEF.
  • Opportunities to ask questions and deepen your understanding of the toolkit and the inspection process.

This series is designed for headteachers, senior leaders and attendance leaders who want to deepen their understanding of the attendance and behaviour evaluation area.

More information about this series

The Ofsted school inspection toolkit is detailed, wide‑ranging and often difficult for leaders to navigate, but understanding it is essential for confident self‑evaluation and inspection readiness.

This series of seven one‑hour online sessions will guide senior leaders through each evaluation area, helping you make sense of what Ofsted is looking for and how this aligns with your school’s practice.

Across the series, you’ll build a clear understanding of each evaluation area, what evidence matters, and how to use this knowledge to strengthen and update your SEF. Each session includes time for questions, giving you the opportunity to explore the toolkit in depth and clarify aspects of the inspection process.
