Using drama improves primary school oracy by giving children a safe way to practice speaking. When you get them out of their seats and into character, magic happens.

Think about that one child who usually freezes up during a class discussion. Put a hat on them and tell them they’re a medieval knight, and suddenly they won’t stop talking. It takes the pressure off them and puts it onto the character. When children speak in role as a character or move with their peers, they worry less about making mistakes. Drama turns abstract vocabulary into active learning, helping pupils build confidence, empathy, and clearer communication skills.

This staff meeting starter encourages us to think about the ways we can use and develop our skills in planning and teaching oracy by using drama to develop spoken skills of all pupils in our class.
