A highly ambitious, well‑sequenced curriculum is central to Ofsted’s evaluation of a school, but leaders also need to show that it is understood, taught effectively and accessible to every pupil.
In this focused one‑hour session, part of our Unpacking the School Inspection Toolkit series, we will explore what Ofsted expects within the curriculum & teaching and achievement evaluation areas and how leaders can evidence strong practice across their school.
You’ll gain clarity on how inspectors evaluate curriculum ambition, foundational skills, teaching quality, adaptations for pupils with additional needs, and the impact of these on pupil achievement and progression.
What we’ll cover:
- How foundational skills (reading, writing, maths, oracy) are prioritised early, with knowledge gaps identified and addressed quickly.
- Whether pupils secure the knowledge and skills needed to progress confidently to the next stage of learning.
- How evidence‑informed teaching supports strong understanding and long‑term memory.
- How leaders use research to remove barriers for SEND and disadvantaged pupils through targeted, effective adaptations.
- How well pupils achieve in national assessments, including whether gaps between key groups are closing.
- Whether pupils develop the full range of knowledge and skills needed to succeed across the curriculum.
- Practical ways to use the information to refine and update the curriculum & teaching and achievement sections of your SEF.
- Opportunities to ask questions and deepen your understanding of the toolkit and the inspection process.

More information about this series
The Ofsted school inspection toolkit is detailed, wide‑ranging and often difficult for leaders to navigate, but understanding it is essential for confident self‑evaluation and inspection readiness.
This series of seven one‑hour online sessions will guide senior leaders through each evaluation area, helping you make sense of what Ofsted is looking for and how this aligns with your school’s practice.
Across the series, you’ll build a clear understanding of each evaluation area, what evidence matters, and how to use this knowledge to strengthen and update your SEF. Each session includes time for questions, giving you the opportunity to explore the toolkit in depth and clarify aspects of the inspection process.
