Personal development and well‑being are central to Ofsted’s evaluation of how well a school supports pupils to thrive academically, socially and emotionally.
In this focused one‑hour session, part of our Unpacking the School Inspection Toolkit series, we will explore what Ofsted expects within the personal development and well‑being evaluation area and how leaders can evidence a coherent, inclusive and impactful approach.
You’ll gain clarity on how inspectors evaluate the breadth and quality of the personal development programme, the effectiveness of pastoral support, and how well leaders ensure all pupils, including those facing disadvantage or additional needs, benefit from meaningful opportunities to grow and succeed.
What we’ll cover:
- How leaders prioritise personal development and well‑being through a broad, coherent and evidence‑informed programme that reflects the school’s context.
- How leaders can articulate how their offer compares to the DfE’s Enrichment Benchmarks.
- How the personal development programme (including SMSC) equips pupils with the knowledge, skills and values needed to lead healthy, reflective and responsible lives in modern Britain.
- How well‑targeted, responsive pastoral support promotes pupils’ emotional health, well‑being and personal development.
- How leaders ensure all pupils access high‑quality, inclusive opportunities to develop personally, socially and emotionally.
- Practical ways to use the information to refine and update the personal development and well-being section of your SEF.
- Opportunities to ask questions and deepen your understanding of the toolkit and the inspection process.

More information about this series
The Ofsted school inspection toolkit is detailed, wide‑ranging and often difficult for leaders to navigate, but understanding it is essential for confident self‑evaluation and inspection readiness.
This series of seven one‑hour online sessions will guide senior leaders through each evaluation area, helping you make sense of what Ofsted is looking for and how this aligns with your school’s practice.
Across the series, you’ll build a clear understanding of each evaluation area, what evidence matters, and how to use this knowledge to strengthen and update your SEF. Each session includes time for questions, giving you the opportunity to explore the toolkit in depth and clarify aspects of the inspection process.
