Developing co-regulation in primary school means using a calm, supportive adult presence to help children manage stress and big emotions. Grounded in emotional safety, it provides the “scaffolding” children need to eventually develop independent self-regulation skills. Co-regulation is a building block for self-regulation, when an adult shares the space and supports a pupil as they move from a dysregulated state to becoming regulated.

The staff meeting starter provides an opportunity for staff to consider and discuss how they approach dysregulated pupils, including the strategies they use to remain regulated themselves during times of stress.
