Adaptive teaching matters because pupils learn at different rates and require different levels and types of support from teaching staff to succeed. However, the use of adaptive teaching, rather than differentiation, smashes through the glass ceiling which can hold some pupils back. In the Adaptive Teaching module we explain what adaptive teaching is and why it matters. We take you through a range of strategies teaching staff can use to adapt their teaching to ensure pupils understand and learn the concepts being taught. We explain how to anticipate barriers to learning, how to use ‘in-the-moment’ adaptations and we explore the importance of using technology and flexible grouping to support pupils’ needs.

Scaffolding is a form of adaptive teaching, and we have a training module entitled Scaffolding Learning which delves into the principles and scaffolding and then we share a range of scaffolding tools and techniques you can easily implement in your classrooms.

2. Pupil engagement and active learning

Pupil engagement is the product of motivation and active learning. Engaged pupils are likely to be better behaved, be more motivated, and make better progress. This staff meeting starter will encourage staff to consider the extent to which pupils are fully engaged, and whether this is impacted by the lesson, time of day, or member of staff.
