Closing attainment gaps: Part 2 Strategies for English and maths

In part 2 of our 'closing attainment gaps' series, we share a range of strategies staff can use to help close the attainment gaps between underachieving pupils and their peers, especially those that are disadvantaged. As oral language development underpins many issues pupils face with English and maths difficulties, we explore the importance of purposeful talk and the need to develop academic language. This is followed by reading, writing, spelling and maths strategies and interventions you could consider. We would recommend this training module for all teaching staff as well as SENCOs and those responsible for supporting disadvantaged pupils. It is likely to take around an hour to complete.

EYFS Best Start in Life series: Part 3 – the 4 specific areas of learning

In this video, we explore the third and final part of Ofsted's research series into what makes an effective early years curriculum, focusing on the specific areas of learning. We think about the important building blocks in English and mathematics that are necessary for future learning. We also explore how the connectivity between understanding the world and expressive arts and design aids early learning. We highlight the strategies and share practices that early years staff should put in place to help ensure that every child gets the best start in life.  This training module is suitable for anyone working in early years, or for subject and senior leaders.
